Was friendly with a real gentleman of the name John Hendeles RN, a WW2 veteran. His ship was parked behind the Hood in dock, and he and others went aboard the Hood, for a quick banyan and took a photo of himself and some mates on Hoods deck, which he showed me. And he added 'After this the Hood sailed off to her demise, so I was one of the last men to stand on her deck'. Life's little things.
John from Southport, was one of the nicest blokes you could ever meet, always positive.

A fascinating story... I just began to collect information on moths a few days back. Not having any background in studying moths or butterflies.. I rely mostly on the internet resources (which is quite inadequate) and this is how I came across your story... A fascinating read and fills the mind with the romanticism of collectors and with your writing can visualise them with their MV lamps in the dark nights of Burren... Beautiful, and amply rewarded with the priceless collection...

Thanks for this information Alec. The Fireside Companion is something I've been meaning to get hold of for a long time. I'll be in touch and would also like to see your catalogue.

Dear Mr Sinha,
I hope the auction goes well. As you are interested in Classey, you may be like to know that we featured the Burren expedition story, together with a photo and illustration, in our book The Aurelian's Fireside Companion: An Entomological Anthology. There are also other photos and mentions of him in the book. As an "armchair mothhunter" you might find the 250 odd articles in the book amusing. If you would like a copy, we can supply a copy for £30 including p&p.

Regards,
Alec Harmer
